Slurrification Process

Atlantic Richfield (ARCO) has a method of slurrification and disposal in which Waters Equipment bases its procedure and protocol. This patented system works like this:

  • 1. The cuttings and fragments are separated from the drilling fluid.
  • 2. They are then discharged through hoses into a sidetrack tank.
  • 3. Utilizing a centrifical pump the cuttings are recirculated in the tank and reduced in size.
  • 4. The cuttings are ultimately mixed with seawater (or other convenient liquids) to form a solution high in viscosity which is pumped into the safe annular area of the wellbore.

Drill cuttings disposal is governed by numerous regulations and they may vary from state to state within the U.S.

The regulations are, but not limited to:

At this time the only alternative to Slurrification requires the transportation of cuttings from offshore to onshore facilities that can handle the disposal. Of course this requires numerous loading and unloading procedures onto tanks, barges, trucks, workboats etc. and the overall liability for spills, human safety and rig down time is increased

One of the major benefits of Cuttings Slurrification is the weather factor. Since no transportation is required, weather conditions need not be agreeable for transport and thus saves the operator from shutting down the rig.
Additionally Oil Based Mud use helps reduce "stuck pipe" situations and consequently reduce the delays associated with some drilling. In the final analysis, here are the winners:
